Merc Tilt and Trim?

I inherited a '71 65 HP Merc, 4 cyliner. Great engine. It runs like a dream. The only problem I have with it, is that it is a heavy son-of-a-gun and my back isn't what it used to be. I know ---"buy a new one" Unfortunately, that isn't in the cards. I've seen new aftermarket tilt and trim units, but I don't care to spend $500 on this old motor. I've browsed around on e-bay and there's no shortage of tilt and trims from fellas parting out their old motors. I'm wondering how difficult it would be to make something like that work with my old beast. I'm reasonably handy. I'm comfortable taking the motor off the transom and removing all the control cables. And where would a guy get info on which Mercury tilt and trims would be compatible with this motor? For instance, the last time I checked e-bay, there was a T&T from an '87 85 hp.

Re: Merc Tilt and Trim?

The 1971 and older 65 hp motors use a 2 ram trim & tilt system, with a single solenoid for the hydraulic pump mounted externally. Somewhere along the line after that they went to a 3 ram system, with 2 solenoids mounted under the engine cowl. In 1972 the 65 hp motors went from a 4 cylinder motor to a 3 cylinder motor, I don't know if this tilt system will work on the earlier 4 cylinder models. I am in the process of putting a 1968 650 trim & tilt unit on my 1971 650 engine. The 68' motor on my project boat was blown and I just picked up the 71' motor for $100. I'm sure someone on the board can give more details and tell you what crosses over. Mike
