I have a 87 merc v-6 with a Alpha 1 outdrive, using a single lever shift control. When I shift with the engine off, it is a nice smooth transition. As soon as the engine is running, it will shift into gear just fine, but won't return to neutral without using great force to do so. I have tried all adjustment as stated in the manual. After adjustment it agian shifts fine without running. As soon as you start up the engine, it's right back to the same old problem. Is my problem with the shift cable from the engine to the outdrive, as I beleive it is?

Check the shift interrupt switch system. If the switch is bad, it will not allow the dogs of the clutch to release. They have a back cut on them that holds them into gear. The shift interrupt switch kills the ignition for a split second to allow the clutch to disengage.

Also try setting your idle to spec.

DHP

As you suggested in your replies, I have checked the cutout switch, making sure the roller is centered in the indent, and it is fine. I have also adjusted the idle speed to the spec stated in the book.

Much appreciated, Bruce

I also have found that once I set all cable adjustment to spec, then start the engine, after one or two shift sequences, the adjustments on the top of the motor appear to be off once again, so that you can see that the cutout switch is activated and cuts the motor out.
