Hello,
Maybe someone can help to steer me in the right direction with a problem I am having with a 1984 merc 150.
I have been troubleshooting a strange problem and need some help/advice. My outboard starts and runs great when first put in the water, but after a few minutes of running it begins to idle rough and hesitates and dies when the throttle is applied. If I quickly accelerate to full throttle it will sometimes run but usually dies. It only does this after running for a few minutes. I first suspected and have checked float levels as well as seat and valve are closing in carbs, fuel is not being stopped and when this happens it does not help to squeeze bulb. I also suspected ignition components that fail after being warmed up but this morning it happened before they even had a chance to get warm.
I live and boat at high elevations and was told that both the idle and main jets had been changed to accomodate 5000 ft elevation. I checked my manual and confirmed the correct jets for this altitude, but found after returning home that the main fuel jet in carb 1 was incorrect. the book shows that each main jet at this altitude should be .060, and it appears that someone misread one and there was a .080 jet in the number 1 carb. I checked all others and they are the correct .060 jets. Is it possible that the over rich mixture on carb 1 would have this bad of an affect on the motor? I replaced the jet with the proper one but was wondering if anyone had any other ideas before I use another day of lake time trying to troubleshoot.
Thanks for any input.
Kip
