1993 3 cyl Merc powerhead in SEA-RAIDER. Replaced defective switchbox. Now upon starting, and turning key off, motor will not stop. Switch not defective.
Disconnecting battery will not shut it off. Only kill by turning off gas. Could it be a diode somewhere?

Hi Andy,

Got the same problem with a 50HP Johnson.
Definatly not the switch.
Been told it my be the power pack.

For what its worth...you can kill it by chokeing it out.

Andypar,Have you double checked the kill circuit.
Take the kill circuit wire and ground it by hand.
Remember the kill switch takes the circuit to ground.

Re: Merc won't STOP

Wiring diagram does not indicate a "kill" circuit. Spike, do all Merc OB have a kill/ground circuit?

I'm not a well seasoned o.b mechanic but I've seen quite a few and EVERY outboard I've seen has somekind of kill circuit in which the coil or spark is grounded which kills the engine. If you replaced the switch you may have broken the kill wire or put it in the wrong place (which I doubt).
