Re: merc yr?

The number does not look right.
Mercury made a 65 from 1963 to 1976.
1972 on had 3 cylinders, 4 before '72.
The last year had a starting serial number of 4382057.
Is this a US motor?

Re: merc yr?

Prior to 1986 (that's when the letter 'A' was introduced to the serial number sequence), all serial numbers had a country of origin coded into it. That code was the first number.

The number '8' is code for Australia. Your motor was built in Australia (probably at the Sydney plant) in the mid seventies. I cannot nail down an exact year, sorry.

Re: merc yr?

My records only go up to 1990.
70's had a thicker blue stripe if memory serves.
Look ont he side of the carb. There should be a shiny dime size 'plate'.
This will have the serial # on it too.
