I have twin 470's and noticed that I have a dribble of water from around the cover plate near the water pump,I managed to get down to look and there is a small hole approx 2mm in the plate. I checked the other engine and this has the same but doesn't appear to dribble. Does anyone have an idea what it is and why it dribbles? My engines are about 1983 and in a searay 260

Yep........Very common on the 470. Your going to have to change both of the waterpump seals. If you have enough room you will not have to remove the engine. You will most likely have to install a speedie sleeve on the cam where the seals ride. Normally a groove will be there. Item number 2 are the seals im talking about.
Before you start leak repair -
go to - sterndrives.com - How to do it
section - Merc. 470 coolant leak repair,
at bottom of page.

This can be a very difficult job. You
may need a Merc. tool ? To do in boat,
you will need a hoist, and 10" space
in front of engine.

A speedie sleeve, is a very thin .0050"
2 inch long sleeve, that can be tapped
or slipped over end of cam shaft, to cover area where old seals have scored shaft.
They work great, cost $20? And you don't
have to remove shaft. And new seals will
fit over them.
