Am in process of rebuilding 2 bbl. Mercarb on 1984 2.5 120hp. Having 2 issues and need advice.

Two needles in kit, spring loaded and no spring...spring style in carb on disassembly.....Manual seems to indicate that the non-spring is a later and preferred style....as in carb may already have been converted to new style. (don't have exact wording here but you get the idea)

Is the non-spring style the way to go?

After getting the varnish off the old plastic float have found it to be cracked. Sierra has a replacement BRASS float.....seems that I have read here that the plastic and ethanol based fuels are not "friendly" and that the brass may be a better material for use.

The issue is that the shape of the 2 floats are quite different and the manual specifies the float setting referenced to a point on the float....is there a way to compensate and use the brass float? or are there instructions for this in the package with the brass float?

As always all help is appreciated......

Re: Mercarb rebuild issues

The spring is only recommended if you suffer from flooding at idle RPM, and other steps have not resolved the problem. When I rebuilt mine, I threw in the spring loaded one as a precautionary measure.

However, having the spring-loaded needle requires different settings for the float dimensions.

The kit I had cautioned that the spring loaded needle may cause lean conditions in some hard turns, so take that into consideration.

I'm not sure about the brass float... that doesn't sound right. I replaced mine with a plastic Sierra float.

The brass or plastic Sierra will work fine.
