That's a tough one as their are many possibilities -- such as // Internal engine parts / shafts, outdrive , something loose , other ???

Maybe if you could take & post a video with good sound so we can hear the noise and see the conditions it will be easier to direct you to the right area.

Or If You can get some help try a stethoscope or even a long screwdriver held to your ear against the various engine area components and to pinpoint the area will help. ( no kidding the screwdriver thing works surprisingly well -- but take care not to get injured on moving parts especially on rough water )

Since this is a used, but new to you boat, you would be well advised to pull the outdrive and do full maintenance on everything. Check the oil, any metal in it? Any water in it? Pull the top cap off the drive, is there anything on the bearing races to tell you there's a problem. Inspect and lube the u-joints and gimbal bearing. Any water in the u-joint bellows? Disassemble and inspect or replace the water pump impeller. Look at everything.

Do an engine oil change so you start fresh. Inspect cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Do a compression check on the motor - that will tell you more about the internals than anything else. Pull the fuel filters and turn them upside down in a clear jar - any crap in the fuel to be worried about?

There is nothing worse than having to walk back from a boating trip early on in your boat ownership days. And nothing burns more than an expensive repair that could have been avoided.

Go to the Adults Only section and read up about maintenance items that you need to have some knowledge of. Make sure you follow the OEM Mercruiser Manual when doing maintenance and repairs. Never use a Seloc for anything but leveling your RV or starting fires.

said look at fuel water separator filter but would that cause a knocking noise..

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... I suggest you inspect the Contents of the fuel filter,......

If it's runnin' lean, detonation is very likely,......

While I wouldn't call detonation "Knocking",.... it does sound like rattlin' a hand full of nuts in a tin can,.....

You oughta listen to Rick,.... That's very solid advice he's givin' ya,.......

Probably not the answer...perhaps...maybe...but I had the very same issue you describe the other week. Exactly the same. Had a brief 5 seconds of panic then realised I had left the boarding ladder down on the rear swim platform, haha.
It would be great if that’s your problem eh ?

Well that noise went away and now the drive oil reservoir keeps overflowing when I bought the boat and went for a ride I did notice that the mechanic told me they topped it off too high it was all the way at top. I noticed when driving boat I checked Redi our it rises a little is this all normal or do I have another problem oil is like a blue color solid

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... I suggest you check the drive oil, from the drain plug,.......

Water is heavier than oil, so if water gets in, the oil over-flows 1st, til it turns milky,.....
Water expands more than oil when heated too,......
