Hello all. I'm interested in getting a mercmonitor. I have a 2010 40hp 4 str mercury with a brand new merc remote control that has the 14 pin duetsche connector(although it only has ten holes) going to the motor. If I get a mercmonitor with level 1 or 2 nmea connections what else would I need? Do I need the can line from the motor to the new monitor? My soft plan is to get a harness kit number 79-8m0062377 with a 3 ft cable to connect to my remote controller harness. But that sounds way to easy. Any help in getting me on the right path would be great.

Hi, First be sure the boat manufacture hasn't already ran the can line between the engine and helm. Lately I've been reading that some of the later model boats equipped with Mercury engines seem to have the line already ran. If not then you'll need the can line and install it yourself.

Looking at the three ebay sellers in the following link for the kit part number your interested in, the first one for $409.50 comes with a 20ft blue can line while the other two do not. 20' CAN Harness Part# 879982T20. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...X79-8m0062377.TRS0&_nkw=79-8m0062377&_sacat=0

If you don't already have the blue can line, then you'll need one, if you do then . < Either way kit part number 79-8m0062377 is a nice kit.

btw, if interested, There is a ton of really great smartcraft and NMEA info/techs that can be found both @ bbc and continuouswave.com that will be able help you out a lot.
If you end up needing to run a can line in a tight spot then you'll need to read the following link,
http://www.bbcboards.net/mercury-3-...w-disassemble-smartcraft-cable-connector.html

Just in case here is some info about NMEA,
http://www.lowrance.com/Global/Lowrance/Documents/NMEA/Mercury_Engine_NMEA2000_Connection.pdf

Please let us know how it all turns out and good luck.:)

I Installed the new controller myself it came new out of the box with a 2014 manufacture date on the box. It connects to the round plug on the front of motor and has a bit blue plastic where it screws in. to the left is the can data connection with the yellow terminator plug. The part that I question is what does the 14 pin connector at the controller do? I assume its for basic tach info but not sure. Its the purple colored female plug. I wanna make sure I have everything figured out before buying anything. The same guy on ebay selling the ecomonitor for $409 with the 20' can data line also has another ecomonitor with a three ft cable which makes me wonder if thats for just gauge cluster or cluster to my controller. That seems way to easy. I'll check out your links and see what I learn. Thanks for your help.

I just ran across a service bulletin covering smartcraft set up on 2006+ engine models that should be beneficial to you when you start to look for your can line. Let us know if this is what you have already installed please, thanks.

http://www.***********************/Me...%202005-16.pdf

You'll have to replace the ***''s with "marine parts express.com"/Me as one word online to make the link work.

That is a smartcraft connector if I'm not mistaken. All the posts I've seen involved running a can line. It'd be easier and a little cheaper if all I needed was a gauge/monitor and harness to run to my control harness.

Your photo reminds me of the last photo this member took of his wiring harnesses. http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...utboards/9361462-smartcraft-1000-installation

If you don't have the harness like seen in [pdf] Mercruiser service bulletin 2005-16 then yep you're going to need the blue cable. I'm a little surprised you don't have it though. What boat model do you have?

Hope you're finding all the info you need online thus far?

hello fun times

That's great. Thanks fun times. I've seen that post as well but it was early on before I knew what I was even looking for. I should message zach123 and find out what he ended up doing. My boat set up is a 1979 basstracker II with a recently added remote controlled 2010 efi 40hp mercury 4str. I'll try and post a couple picks. I haven't had much time with work and the girlfriend to look into this properly. I really appreciate the help.

Okay I follow you now, I was thinking your boat was a newer model. 2006+. Chances are high that a 1979 boat wouldn't have any of the newer styling smartcraft harnesses if there wasn't already a smartcraft gauge installed. I'm pretty sure the new control unit will have a warning horn mounted inside so be sure to try and connect that as well since you already have the new control. I believe it will plug into the blue cable can line.

I'd be nice to know how zach123 turned out.
