Mercontrol Malfuntion

[TAP6332]

Throdle goes in forward but no reverse,&no power or speed till I lift outer black lever, which I understand to be chock assist on startup. If I lift black lever I have power, But max. 6hp

Hi Tap<br />The small lever is a warm-up throtle or fast idle throtle. This lever allows you to throtle up while in neutral. It should only allow a safe fast idle and no more. When the warm-up lever is raised it should not allow you to shift gears. Once you have the motor started and warmed up return the lever to the down position. Then with the large lever push for forward, once in gear push farther for throtle. The same for reverse except you pull. Now some times when these boxes become worn, when you push the large lever forward, the small lever wants to come up with it. In this case hold the small lever down with one hand while operating the large one. If this is the case you will have to service your controls soon.

Also, TAP<br />With motor OFF, get someone to push the large lever forward, and have a look at the linkages on your motor. Both sets of linkages should be working and when fully forward, they should reach the stops when the lever is fully forward or backward. If nothing is happening or they are only partially moving, you need to either adjust or replace the cable.

HI guy's, I have that exact same problem .the little black handle comes up when you throttle forward & you can shift into gear while handle is up . is there a way to fix or rebuild these controls or should i just replace it ?

Skip.<br />The only thing I found to be a problem, is in most manuals, there are no diagrams for the controllers, so if you pull it apart, you may get a bit confuzzeled... trying to re-assem.<br />A kind iboater sent me a set of pdf's with exploded views of the more common early types. if you want a copy, e-mail me @andrewkafp@yahoo.com.au and I will send to you.
