I have a 1978 VIP tri-hull with an 850 mercury thunderbolt 85horse outboard. when i shift into forward gear it also raises the high idle lever and binds up. sometimes i lose all shift control and have to go to nutreal then shift back in gear but it still binds with the high idle lever.
i am trying to take the cover off to see what the bind up is but i cant get the shift lever off. any help or ideas would be appreciated. thanks.

big mo

Re: mercontrol problems

mocats

You might try adjusting the cables at the engine first. Many times if it's too tight it will cause problems at the shift control. This is especially true of the throttle cable adjustment.

Re: mercontrol problems

it means it wasn't put back together properly or the little ball bearing isn't there anymore causing both to bind eachother and move... Your better off getting a newer "Quicksilver Blue Band" control boxes from a wrecker and coverting the wires yourself to the new key switch (ill draw up some diagrams)

Best thing i ever did... It also has a lock in gear so when you put it neutral you can't move it into gear without pushing in the button under your finger rest...

Best thing i ever did.. those old controls are nasty crappy and very unreliable... The new ones are much easier to put together.. have seperate compartments and are much easier to grease up when needs be :)
