Mercontrol replacement?

What are my options as a good but not too expensive controls to replace my tired old Mercontrol box. It would need to have a secondary/high idle lever along with the throttle/shift lever. Trim controls are optional I guess, as those can be placed elsewhere. The motor is a 77 Merc 115 horse.

Re: Mercontrol replacement?

I've done the search, and while I see many posts about control problems, I haven't found a single one regarding information about my question.

The problem with mine is that it feels tight and is not smooth in motion at all. It's impossible to adjust throttle in small increments smoothly as the controls bind and good effort is required to move the lever, at which point it usually jumps a little too far before I can stop my hand from pushing forward. Also, I don't think I am getting full throttle out of it even when the lever is pushed all the way forward and down somewhat(as far as it will go). I know this second question could possibly be answered with a cable adjustment, I was just wondering if all these symptoms mean a replacement is required before I spend a ton of time trying to make a broke thing work again.

Take it apart and grease the cams and wheels inside. I took mine apart and repainted it. You can find them on fleabay or craigslist occasionally or on junker boats.

Remove the motor cowling, push the throttle handle all the way forward and see if the carbs are completely open.

The cables could also be binding. Those merControls last a real long time. I still use the one from my '77 inline six. it works great.
