mercontrol to sensitive question

My older mercontrol remote works fine but is terribly sensitive. From when it begins increasing rpm, to max rpm is very little handle movement. About 1". It seems very sticky and touchy, you just tap it to move it and it jumps around500rpm in the direction you move it, making it difficult to control a constant speed, really upsetting skiers.
Is there a worn or sticky part inside it, a cable maybe. The cable seems to move freely.

I'm a cnc machinist, so I was thinking of re-desigining the cam to give a more smoother, larger range of movement if this jerky control is the way it is supposed to be. Any opinions?

Know about CNC's and love them but the industry didn't have that problem as a whole. There is something amis about your box. A disassy might tell you what the problem is.

if neutral is about 12 oclock on controller, gear shift should engage around 11 oclock and WOT should be about 8- 9 oclock, sounds like cable adjustment in controller is a little tight

Nature of the box...at least mine (and a lot of others here have mentioned)...90% of the action happens in the last few inches

mine would throttle up in last few inchs and throttle down about 3 inch worth, put a new throttle cam in it and its more gradual and even. then i adjusted cable inside and it has more travel, but my fast idle doesn't go up as high as it used too

Re: mercontrol to sensitive question

ok, I dissasembled the unit.

There is about a 1/32-1/16 slop between the brass roller and the slot it rolls in. That seems too loose for a cam-follower.
I figure that at the angle the slot is in during engagement, the slop allows play in the throttle and allows the motor's rpm wander, giving it the appearance of being too stick or sensitive.

How much clearance should there be between the brass cam-follower and the slot it runs in?

SWAG? A few thousandths (just enough clearance to turn easily) since slop seems to be part of the problem.

my roller was worn a bit to the side it followed on, so i took it out and flipped it the other way, and it seemed to ride better
