Just sized up the oil filter changing logistics on my 2002 Merc.5.0 litre in 2359 Trophy,recently aquired. Jumping Jehosephat that is one miserable place to get at. anyone know of a good tool to make this go better AND what is involved to change to remote filter. I suppose the manifold would have to come off for starters?Any info appreciated

I believe it's at the port side way back. What you do is run the motor for a few minutes to get the oil warm, then shut her down when the oil is warm enough to flow well. Then either suck the oil out the dipstick tube or drain it out through the hull drain if you have the extension hose from the bottom of the oil pan.
If the boat is in the way of reaching the filter look around, there may be some way to remove or reach around your obstruction. Maybe a removable deck panel, seat bottom or such. You will need either a strap wrench, an oil filter pliers or an oil filter socket that fits over the end of the filter. Take a hard look at the setup then go through some tool catalogs. All of a sudden you'll see a tool that will do exactly what you want.
I'd suggest getting some oil absorber matting too, some of the oil always drips. It's easier to catch it beforehand than it is to clean up afterward.

oil filter wrench - the kind with the metal band, if it is slipping on the filter put a shop rag around the filter and retry

when you install the new filter be sure to put some oil on the rubber gasket

what is involved to change to remote filter

you need a remote oil filter kit - available through any merc dealer

once you get the parts you will see what is needed to install it - the adapter for the lines replaces the filter on the block

Re: Mercr. 5.0 oil filter location

I've got ss headers on my 5.7 sbc, that are even bulkier that the oem manifolds/risers, so I played Houdini when it came to changing oil/filter.

I converted from OMC stringer to Merc a couple years ago, had the engine out, so figured that was the ideal time to spin on an adapter. I put the filter end high on the front right side of engine bay. It should have been there from day 1.

I slide a plastic newspaper bag over the filter to remove it, then there's no dirty oil into the boat or on my hands.

Mine is not too bad, I take out the rear seat and move back the battery on that side and I can get at it....I have thought of putting on a remote mount but concerned about leaks, maybe I'll pick up a Merc V-6 one and try it....

Trophy's are a PITA to do most anything on...just wait till you need a starter...remote filter the way to go!

Use GoodYear push-on hose & barbed fittings (with paste sealant on the NPT threads) and you'll have no leaks. They're so good they don't need clamps.

So the remote filter adapter kind of screws on oin place of a filter?could do this with manifold on you think?
Re the starter access yes Ive noticed that. At least I can SEE it with a mirror, the oil filter is pretty well invisible from all angles it seems. (I had to go look at a truck I have with a 350 in it to get an idea of where the filter must be before I found it finally.)

Ayuh,... It's a housing that bolts on, instead of the filter,...
It's has 2 oil lines with the filter housing on the other ends...
There should be brackets bolted to the filter housing which attaches under the 2 forward riser bolts, portside...

Re: Mercr. 5.0 oil filter location

When I first bought my 80 Classic sportscruiser with a 5.7 Mercruiser I thought that Mercruiser had forgotten to put an oil filter on the engine! I didn't find it until I pulled the manifolds for replacement. Luckily, that was before the boat went into the water. A remote oil filter is definitely the way to go. In addition, if you ever need to replace the strarter, use the smaller, lighter, high-torque, permanent-magnet one. It's MUCH easier to install, especially with limited space around the engine. Hy

Here's the adapter;
http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Gasket-7692-Remote-Filter/dp/B000CMD73I/ref=pd_bxgy_auto_img_a
And the filter end;
http://www.amazon.com/Trans-Dapt-1028-Single-Relocation-Bracket/dp/B000CQ20FU/ref=pd_bxgy_auto_img_b

Some kits include 4 brass ?"NPT/hose barb fittings and 4' hose.
I bought longer hoses to get mine where I wanted.

When looking for a relocation kit, read the fine print. Many of the die cast parts such as Trans Dapt 1028 are not rated for marine use. They do, however, make a kit out of billet aluminum that is rated for marine use.
