mercruiser 1 outdrive question

I have a 3.0 mercruiser engine that runs great and a merc 1 outdrive., But at the lake the other day the propellar just stopped turning. Boat felt like a just lost the prop but it just stopped turning. It feels as it shifting into gear correctly (I feel it shift and I cant manually turn the prop in forward or reverse). I was able to put along about 2000 rpm to get back but I am just not getting full power to the prop? Whats the most likely problem? thanks in advance!

Most likley you have spun the coupler. Did the temp go up?

Possibly Trent, but lets hope for an easier fix first, could have spun the prop hub. If engine did not run hot then try your spare prop, if thats OK your local prop shop can re hub your old one.

Thanks all....and it was the easier of the two! Thats usually not my luck...What usually causes a prop to do that?

Hey Jarrod, glad it worked out for you. The hub in the prop is set in rubber. Over time and use the hub can simply wear out and slip. If the prop takes a hit it can spin it too, although usually that takes a chunk out of one of the blades as well.
