I have a boat with a 1971 Mercruiser 120 I/O unit and it's beens stored for a few years in a garage, the prop shaft seal is showing signs of oil around it. How much trouble is it to fix that seal? The lower unit was rebuilt and never run before it sat, is that seal replaced from the outside or will it require a complete disassembly?
It's not running out or dripping, but it leaked enough to make the skeg wet looking. It didn't leave a spot on the concrete or anything.
I also considered the posibility that it's only the grease that's slathered on the prop shaft to keep the prop from seizing that broke down as well.
I got that boat from a marina that just installed a fresh lower unit, installed a new gimble bearing, driveshaft and all bellows. It's been in a heated garage ever since.Whether or not it's a leak or the grease dripping, If it's a simple fix, I'd feel better about having a fresh seal in there. I plan to get this in shape and ready to use in the next few weeks.
