Mercruiser 120 R Drive Tilt Issue

I noticed that my tilt only works in DOWN or when I press TRAILER (goes up). The up switch does not work when the engine is down. My trim gauge is pegged at UP at all times; so I either figured I have a bad trim motor relay or there is a sensor/switch that is broken/disconnected, etc...

Anyone have experience with this? I suppose I could just trim up with the trailer button while under power :)
Thanks!

Probably nothing more than a defective trim limit switch, or it's way out of adjustment. Below is a link to download the OEM service manual, once you download it, look at section 1C. There are details on troublshooting the trims electrical system, with wiring diagrams.

Have you opened up the sensor to see what is going on inside? I opened mine up and it was shorted out due to oils from really old grease. Cleaned them up, reinstalled and I now have working limit switch and gauge

Nope, but now that I know it exists (for sure) I'm going to check that out! Or replace it.

Thanks guys!

Here was the problem! All tilt/trim restored... Pain in the back getting my hands in there with electrical tape. Trim gauge still stuck at UP... I should probably check my wiring from the tilt motor to the gauge... There wasn't too much nasty grease in the switch. I neglected to check the other side or mess with the alignment of the switch though.

Ayuh,... Good Luck with that,...

Generally, it's either Replace 'em, or By-pass 'em inside the boat....

Yeah generally when the wires look like that the insulation is done, will soon start to crumble like sand. Good thing is you can re-wire these, bad thing is the extreme confined space makes it a tough task... But it is possible without removing drive etc.
