Hello.

I'm having a heck of a time with my boat. I'm not a great mechanic, but I've been working on my Mercruiser 120 and have isolated a surging problem to what I think is the choke of my carburetor.

I purchased a SELOC book and have set the points to spec. The boat sat for three years, so I rebuilt the carburetor and replaced spark plugs. When I set the mixture screws to 1.5 turns (as stated in the book), I've been having starting problems. With the mixture screws WAY out, there was no problem starting, but I think it was running way too rich (surging problems above 2800 RPM). The boat doesn't start now unless I manually close the choke.

Looking at the literature that came with the carburetor rebuild kit, it seems that I have a Rochester 2GV. I have verified the choke unloader adjustment and have set the vacuum break.

However, there should be a rod that closes the choke. The kit contains some information that 1968-1969 model Chevrolet cars had an automatic choke. What sort of setup is normal on this configuration? There doesn't seem to be any documentation in the SELOC book.

I can post some photos to a website if necessary.
