Hi I am working on a boat for my dad and need advice on a few things. Engine is mercruiser 2.5 chevy. It's a late 60's model I dont remember exactly. Anyways the boat was running fine earlier in the year. Went to hook up a battery to it, and the engine started turning over without warning and wouldnt stop until the battery was un hooked. It has a strange set up of a keyed ignition, but push button start. I dunno if that was common back then, but either way...replaced push button, still does it. Completely disconnected push button. Still does it. Wiring at starter is fine and in the right places. Plus, the starter wiring was never touched since it last ran fine with no issues like this.

So all I can assume is that the starter is bad. But has anyone ever heard of a starter failing by getting stuck on? I sure havent.

Also, is it acceptable to use teflon tape at trim hose connections? This boat is so old it has the goofy trim hose manifolds in the transom assembly, instead of underneath the gimbal like the modern mercruisers. And they leak even after being tightened, and are a major pain in the butt to get to as well, even with drive and bellows off.
