I have a 1984 Mercruiser 140 Inboard engine and it acts as if it is going to start but it don't. This is what I've done so far:

At first it was not firing:
We replaced the coil, points, and condenser. We set the points correctly and now we are getting fire.

It acts as if it is going to start but it doesn't:
We checked if the carberator is getting fuel and it is. We replaced the fuel filter and it still won't start. If the shift is put into neutral position the boat doesn't try to start at all. When you push it forward slightly it tries to start but doesn't.

Looking for any suggestions!

You could have a couple of problems. Disconnect the shift interrupter switch (port side just under the exhaust manifold). Looks like a little switch in a "V Bracket" and try to restart. Also try to pour a little fuel down the carb and try.
