Ok, I tried to look for this question on here already, but 85 pages is alot to go through with a dial up connect. Heres the problem. I was driving our 1985 Rinker with a Mercruiser 140 I/O this weekend, and we had been going slower than normal, as a friend was on his new, slower boat. Well, I accelerated, then let off a little because I was pulling away from them, and the boat just died, as if the key was turned off. It wasn't turned off. I tried to crank it, but just got a "CHUNK" noise, as if the battery was dead, and it couldn't turn over. Then we got home, and the next morning it started with the muffs on just fine. BUT, when we got to the lake, my husband backed it off the trailer, and as I was parking the vehicle, he said he accelerated, heard a "pop", and it died again as before, like the key was turned to off. He is a mechanic, so we are hoping to fix this ourselves. ANY advice is greatly appreciated. It has oil, plugs and wires are new, distributer is from last year, but I believe the rotor button is new.

Pull the sparkplugs and check for water on the plugs. Spin the engine over with the sparkplugs out. Also check for water in the oil. My bet is your manfold and risers have never been changed. Water intrusion will cause what you have described.

Re: Mercruiser 140 died

Thank you. I will tell my husband when i get home from work. Also any other ideas would be great, sao we can do it all (hopefully) at once. Any idea on what risers / manifold would run for this type of engine? Also, I did see a post and someone had said something about a solenoid. My husband said he saw 2 or 3 on our motor. Thanks for all your help
