I have an 80's vintage Mercruiser 140 with only 45 hours on it.
It was last run in 1987.
To get it running again I changed oil, cap rotor points, condenser, lower unit gear lube, drained the gas tank, cleaned carb. The carb was really gummed up! My cleaning of carb consisted of removing the top cover and cleaning float area, removing the two brass jets that exit the bowl and lifting the brass tube section thats held down by four screws. After doing this the unit
ran. Good Idle and smooth rev in neutral.
On the water will run at no wake speed ok
when I put gas to it it dies immediately.
Any recommendations? Thanks in Advance

Re: Mercruiser 140 dies under load

well sonds like your off to a good start
so you didnt do a rebuild kit on the carb?? just cleaned it?
how did the accelerator pump look when you had the carb apart??
look down the carb throat and opperate the throtle
you should see 2 strong streams of gas for each pump of the throtle
hope this help's it's the first thing i would check
if the carb was really gummed up like you said i would do a complete rebuild on it that should rule out the carb, the kit for my Mcruiser 120 was around $50.00
good luck
CBN
