Could be the fuel pump. Take the gas line off the front of the carb and slip it into a plastic bottle. Crank over your motor and see if there is a good flow of gas

What engine is it? Please be specific.
If it's carbed, are you trying to start it like and EFI engine? If so it ain't gonna work my friend.
You need to pump the throttle once to set the choke and squirt some fuel into the engine from the accelerator pump in the carb.
If you did this, you could have a bad accelerator pump. or no fuel in the carb which could be because of a bad pump, plugged filter, or faulty carb. Has it been tuned up lately?

don, its been tuned up about a month ago with points, rotor, cap, wires, plugs, wires, last year the carb was bought new, fuel seperator is new also, it ran awesome 2 weeks ago on the muffs, is there a way to check the accelerator pump? if i disconnect the throttle linkage and pump the throttle i see very little gas go in the throat of the carb.

It should pulsate fuel from the line. Make sure you put the end in a bottle. You will know if it is pumping. I had a simialar problem that you are having and I took my line off at the tank and filled the line with gas. I also cleaned and lubed the pump so I am not sure which did it but it worked after that

Take off the gas line on the gas tank side of the pump, left side of pump while you are facing it, and see if it has gas in it.

Re: mercruiser 140 fuel prob.

If there is no gas take the gas line off the top of the gas tank. There is a fitting there with a valve that stops the gas from going back into the tank and keeps the line to the carb full. Take a very small funnel and slowly fill that line full and see if it stays full. If it does, hook the line back up to the tank and turn it over and see if the pump pushes it through. You could also be stupid like me. I took off the rubber line at the pump and layed down and sucked on it until gas came and I almost choked to death. lol. Your prob sounds just like the one I had and I almost wasted 140.00 on a new pump

If she is running for 3 minutes then it is something else. I think you should check your filters and water seperator if you have one. When it quits will it start right back up and run for 3 minutes again?

There is a filter where the gas line goes in the carb. While you have the line unhooked, put the line in a plastic bottle. turn the motor over and see if there is a good flow of gas. Is there any thing on top of your fuel pump? Also how long does it run before it stalls again?

I do n't have gas going to the carb, so I should remove the line from the fuel pump, use a funnel and pour gas into this hose until full, is this correct?? then, if it stays full, hook the line back up to the tank and turn it over and see if the pump pushes it through.
