Hi, my Mercruiser 140 (from 1973) is switching off when going in slow speed or on neutral. Could you possible give me any tips how to solve this? Is there any detailed manual available on the NET? I tried to search but was not successful.

Thanks a lot,
David.

Welcome to iboats, you mean the motor dies when you shift from forward to neutral? Or it just dieing when you drive slow. Any different sounds when this happens?

Re: Mercruiser 140 off on slow speeds

Hi, thank you for reply. What I do is I start the engine, let it go a bit on higher rpm (about 2000) for a little while to warm up, then put back from forward to neutral and after couple of minutes it just dies. The same happends when i drive very slow. But no, there is no strange sound or anything. About 1.500rpm its vibrating and giving a bit more sound than usual but I guess that is normal.

Thanks for your effort,
David.

Have you given it a tuneup in awhile? New plugs, filters, cap...that kinda thing? It isn't realyy normal to vibrate much. How is the gimble bearing, ujoints? Is this a MR drive?

Re: Mercruiser 140 off on slow speeds

I bought new plugs last week - that was the first thing my friends recommended, unfortunatelly did not help anything. Regarding filter and so on am not sure, the previous owner was "cleaning the engine" every year (he claimed and the engine looks really well taken care of), I took over 14 days ago.
Next think I've heard of was it could be some adjustment of the gas so it gets more on low speed and does not die, but am new to this things so I'd appreciate any help from someone advanced :)

Thanks,
David.

i think you need a service manual dont no the one for a 1973 motor

and you really need a full tune up with NEW everything ,points ,condenser, cap, rotar, carb fuel filter ect

marine ignition parts have a short life about 1 year for best results and the 140 being a 4 cylinder motor needs good parts to idle well

tommays

Re: Mercruiser 140 off on slow speeds

You need Mercruiser volume #1. #2 would do it as well. I don't think it is availible on line. But: point gap:.022. Point dwell: 31-34 degrees Plug ac - mr43-T or champion rbl-8, or equivelant. Gap:.035 Timing: 6 degrees BTDC at idle. wot 4200-4600. idle rpm (in gear) 650-700. Firing order: 1-3-4-2. Hope this helps- :) ...J

The strange thing is it goes all OK in higher speeds (over 1.300rpm) and does not stop.
Anyone would have a link for the manuals maybe?

I've checked with the former owner now and all the parts were changed early this year and the engine was tuned up.

Thanks,
David.
