i have a 1984 thundercraft with the mercruiser 140, i recently had it out and everytime i tried to throttle up it would get to about 2000 rpm's and die, then when i was limping back to the dock the engine overheated. i discovered that the water tube between the transom and outdrive had broken. what kind of damage can i be expecting from the overheat problem and does anyone have any ideas as to why the engine is dying? Im not sure if this makes a difference but it has an electric inline fuel pump instead of the mechanical one, could this be my problem?

Re: Mercruiser 140 problems

overheat damage?? depends how bad it overheated, if you are really concerned do a compression test

you need to resolve the cooling issue first, then move onto the runnability issue

as far as running bad when was the last tune-up?? have you inspected the fuel system??

may even have something to do with the overheat
