Mercruiser 140 shift cables are killin' me!

Ok, so replaced and installed new cables but am still only getting reverse in the water...I adjust on trailer, I get ccw in forward locked. Free spin in neutral. Cw in reverse locked.
I put her tail in the drink and all I get is reverse??? Sooo any ideas out there???

How are you adjusting the cable? Are you checking that the shift plate lever is actually moving the right way?

To answer your question, I am not completely sure...???

Well, it is a 1978 Beach liner and on the production of such the shift plate is on top of the flywheel. The drive shift cable mounts from port to starboard. The remote mounts from the starboard side so the cables end up being opposite direction of each other...which is weird?

I'll go take some pictures and lost them here in a bit...

Anyway, really is becoming a struggle.
