I ordered the quicksilver shutter for my 1973 mercruiser 140. I know I have to drill out the rivets for the support bracket then use a sealant around it when I reinstall(per manual).

Should I replace with machine screws or with aluminum rivets?

The manual says to unscrew the bracket but mine are rivets.

Is there a benefit to using rivets over machine screws?

If you haven't removed the old one yet you don't have to drill it out.
There might not be very much room.

You can use a dremel or grinder to grind off the rivets on one of the 2 clips that hold the flapper in. That allows you to remove the old flapper.

You can use the clip that's left there with one of the new clips.
It makes sense once you remove the flapper.

I use 10-32 SS machine screws because that's what I have on hand;)

I have the motor out right now, I did a full resto on the boat. So room is not an issue, I dont have either on hand right now. So it will be whichever I find first at the store👍

I appreciate everybody's help.
