Hi,

My mercruiser 140HP 3.0L seems to get to hot. If I run the engine without a gear (not full speed!), white smoke an a smell is produced by the engine. How to check if the cooling system is ok?

The engine has a water valve, for removing the water in winter. When I open this valve and run the engine, water is forced out through the valve.

Does that mean, that the cooling is ok?

Thanks for answering,

STOON from AUSTRIA

You cannot touch the top of the engine. I have no temperature sensor.

How hot is your engine?

Do not understand what you mean,"run the engine without a gear" , but you should invest in SENDING UNIT AND TEMP GAUGE WHICH SHOULD NOT COST OVER ABOUT 50 BUCKS. sALT WATER COOLED ENGINES SHOULD NOT RUN OVER ABOUT 150 DEGREES F.

If you can't touch the top of the engine, you have a cooling problem. Only part that should be too hot to touch on that engine is the part of the maniflod that is between the carb and the block, as that small section is an exhaust port without a water jacket. Everything else should be warm to mildly hot, but you should not feel pain or burning touching it.

Raw water cooled should be 140-150, FWC should be 160-170, maybe 180. Anything over those numbers indicates a potential problem.

Hi,

Thanks for answering.
My problems are now complete.
When I watched the engine today, I saw a lot of oil and water under the engine in the boat. When I startet the engine, I saw coming out water and oil near the air filter.....

I think the head gasket is broken.
