I have a 1979 Arrow Glass Cheetah that has a Mercruiser 165 straight 6 250cid with a Mercruiser 1 outdrive. I recently replaced the lower shift cable and shifting is greatly improved but I'm not getting the engine stall with the cutoff switch. The switch is good and works if I push it by hand, but I noticed that my control cable does not look like the many I have seen on youtube tutorials and was wondering if it was a universal that is not meant for this type of boat. The control box is a Morse control box, the cable Im not sure what brand it is. From what I have seen I thought these cables were supposed to slide a little bit in the barrel they are tightened in? Any help would be appreciated.

Testing was done in the water. I can go forward, stop, and go into reverse just fine in the water but I don't get the stall. I can adjust the switch to where it will stall, but it is definitely not smooth and stalls while going into gear when I thought its only supposed to stall coming out of gear? What has me concerned is the big plastic end on the control cable, the barrel clamp on the shift plate barely fits around it. Do you think the shift plates or the spring arms(sorry not sure what the part name is) ever need to be replaced, could it be bad control cable? The lower shift cable has movement enough and is pretty smooth, I can use it like it is but Id like it to work like it was meant to.
