Hello all
Is it possible/advisable to fit a heat exchanger kit to a 165 without replacing the original thermostat & thermostat housing. Any information greatly appreciated!

Mercruiser 165 Heat exchanger

Hello I am curious as to which connections the heat exchanger 'fresh water in & out' hoses should be connected to A, B, C, D,E or J (existing raw water in connection)?
Was also curious as to which riser gasket I should close off for a full closed system (G) at the manifold or (H) half way up the riser?
Also is my 3/4 inch elbow fitting large enough to expel the raw water at the bottom of the riser
Here are some pics to assist.
Also does anybody know the purpose of the manifold tap (E) at the front of the engine?

Many thanks for any help

HELLO Bondo thanks for your response
It's an inline 6 Chevy I posted some pics but stupidly on another thread - very new to this site!
Why? Because I was given a heat exchanger for this model and many people recommend them, but I understand the issues involved with installing on a used engined so installing with regular maintenance in mind. Thanks

Yes in my very short experience with mercruisers I am yet to see a similar setup like that here either (Australia)!
Looks like the previous owner who i never met had an engineering background/workshop!

I don't know the answers to all your questions, but I do know you have an exhaust manifold (and plumbing) from the mid 1960s' there.... It's also not freshwater cooled, it's raw water... (and nothing to do with the POs background)

I have a diagram of your manifold...

And one question I can answer, yes, that 3/4" hose is more than adequate to flow enough water....

The last piece of 'news'... It's not from a 165, more like an old 150....

Ayuh,.... I have to agree with the Real Experts in yer other thread,.... I've never seen Anything like it before,...

I guess, If it were Me,.... I'd run it as is, til the day comes that it dies,....
Then up-date to to atleast some 70's vintage stuff, that parts can be bought for,...

I'm mergin' yer threads,... please don't post yer question more than once, 'n in only 1 forum,...

Thank you,...

Re: Mercruiser 165 Heat exchanger

Now I'm confused... Doesn't matter, that happens a lot ...

You can't put a closed cooling system on this engine.... The thermostat location and general plumbing won't allow it. If you really want to, you need to change the entire manifold and all the cooling system parts from the water pump back... And if the engine's been run in salt, not recommended....
