Hello all. Hopefully taking the SS Kirra II for her 'maiden' voyage this weekend.
She shifts from nuetral to forward & reverse quite easily but I dont hear any of the 'almost stall' of the engine when doing so.
As a result there is a very slight grinding of the gears and the revs dont seem to drop as required.
Any help greatly appreciated,
Thanks PhilSS Kirra4.jpg

Hello I think I have worked it out - I failed to consult my manual when I did the following ....

"DO NOT TAMPER WITH THE ADJUSTMENT BARREL ON THE CABLE UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE DOING, THIS SHOULD ONLY BE CARRIED OUT WITH MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE AND A MAINTAINENCE MANUAL"

Only when there is load on the propeller. So not when you are running on muffs.

assuming your talking about going from neutral to fwd and neutral to reverse. the grinding of the gears is normal. just make a quicker snappier shift.
it's only when you go from fwd back to neutral or reverse back to neutral that the shift interrupt switch operates. it takes the load off the undercut gears that are tightly in mesh and held there by being undercut. when the load is off these gears, by turning off the engine momentarily, via the interrupt switch, that you can separate these gears and get back into neutral from either fwd or rev.

Re: Mercruiser 165 inline 6 Pre alpha shift issues

i have the inline 165 , its a 1973, so im not sure if were talking about the same style. but i took it out today for the first time and it made a terrible grinding clunking sound when put in reverse, but when put in forward it made a typical "gears engaging " sound.
prior to this, i muffed it and engaged forward and reverse with minimal sounds (like normal? i assume)
but in the water reverse was like i said F'd up.
so how could it enguage one way but not the other
