Ayuh,....

You're going to find that the old electric shifts are becoming Antique,+ I believe they are no longer supported by Mercruiser...

If you go up to the "Adults Only" sticky at the top of the forum,+ download manual #1,...
I believe the electric shifts are covered in it....

Don will be by shortly,+ I'm sure he has a better idea of your Options...

Assuming you are talking about the electrical unit that mounts on the inner transom that shifts the 1 drives, about the only thing I can say is make sure you have power to the unit. I haven't seen or worked on one of those units in 10 or 12 years, and have never seen anything in any manual on it. SM #4 does have a troubleshooting chart, but no drawings or wiring diagrams to go with it.

Re: Mercruiser 165 L6 Elctric gear shift problem

thanks for the responses,

the shift is on a 1968 bertram hardtop built by internatial marine in Australia
running duel 165 mercrusers

there is power and earth running to a bank of 8 relays, which the shift switches are wired two, the then send wire down to the actuaters on the transum which then pull push the shifting cable, there is also a rev limiter which stops the shift if not ideling. still think it is a wire loose or off ???

Well, the 165's didn't come out until 1970, and since you have a 68 boat, it's really hard to say what was changed to what in the past 40 years by previous owners. Got some pictures of your setup?

problem fixed, there were a couple of faulty earth leads which stoped the units working.
