I purchased a Mercruiser 165 outdrive on ebay recently. Looks to be in good shape except for some minor dings on the skeg. I plan on installing a new water pump. Today I took the top cover off to inspect the gears. Looks ok so far. My question is this: is there supposed to be a gasket under the top cover or just an o-ring? This is my first i/o. Other than a water pump kit, what else shoud I look for/ do? The gear oil looks clear from the top end. Haven't drained it yet.

Re: Mercruiser 165 Outdrive Questions

Seperated the 2 halves of the outdrive. Came apart relatively easily. I noticed there wasn't an o-ring on the top of the drive shaft. I also noticed there wasn't a screen on the water inlet on the lower unit where the water enters. Can I install these screens when I remove the water pump?

Re: Mercruiser 165 Outdrive Questions

OK..........I replaced the water pump without any problems. Also found out there weren't any screens used on these outdrives. I intend to grease the u-joints on the driveshaft, is it neccessary to use a special grease gun? There doesn't seem to be much room to access the fittings....
