Mercruiser 165 Removal

Bought a cherry 1 owner '78 Glastron V195 that had a stuck motor/starter for $500. Perfect otherwise.

Well, motor had about 2 gallons of water in it. Drained it, filled it, put a new starter on it and it was just spinning. Pulled the starter off and noticed the ring gear had removed itself from the flywheel, it's just loose in the bellhousing. I can't see any way of fixing it besides pulling the motor...

So looks like the motor is coming out now. I build classic Chevy's, so I'm very familiar with the Inline 250's (GM stamped on the side too). But this is my first major boat project. I've removed outdrives and what not before.

Looks pretty straight forward, can anyone tell me if I've missed anything? Going to knock it out this weekend and freshen up the motor while it's out. Thankfully our tractor should make quick work of the heavy lifting.

Fuel line
Wiring
Motor mounts
Outdrive (6 nuts + trim piston nuts)
Motor

You'll also need to remove the throttle cable, and loosen the exhaust elbow clamps. Remove the rear mount screws, and remove the front mount lag bolts (take the front mount out with the engine. Makes it easier to put down on the ground, and it's easier than unbolting the front mount form the engine)

Wiring it just the battery cable on the starter and the big 10 pin canon plug at the back...

Yeah, I was looking at it earlier Chris, just didn't know if there was anything behind the motor I couldn't see. I noticed the exhaust elbow, figured I would have to remove throttle cable as well.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... Pull the drive 1st, then the motor,....

When ya pull the drive, it's shaft is pulled from the motor, so nothin' else to disconnect,....

Welcome to the forum.

One more thing is the water hose from the transom to the front of the motor.

With the other things mentioned, that should do it before the grunt work begins, but use a hoist. :smile:

Thanks, we'll be using the tractor because I'm lazy (helicopter mechanic by trade).
