I have 1974 Sea Ray with a mercruiser 165 inline 6 and it has a raJay turbo kit installed. It’s always been a little hard to start and provably needs the idle adjusted up a bit, but for the most part the past 2 summers it’s ran great and haven’t had any engine issues.
It’s always kept in the garage. Recently I took it on a trip and it rained real bad and the engine cover was off for one night. Next day took it on the water and everything was good. Turn it off, then I was never able to get it to start again. I replaced the coil and noticed that the carb choke was basically stuck mostly closed but open a tiny bit. It seemed to be jammed rather than tightened by the spring. I took spring out and adjusted it so you can push on the flap slighty and it will open all the way. I changed the wires too and cap and rotor, didn’t mess with the points at all. Now, I can get it to start but it runs like garbage. At one point the engine was shaking real bad I may have had the firing order off.
my main symptoms right now are that it runs but doesn’t run well, and I cannot get it to go full throttle. It struggles to get anywhere with a load and won’t get up to speed. Seeing some black some out of the exhaust.. engine shaking more than normal and running rough.
1. Since it has a ra jay turbo on this thing, should the choke flap be adjusted any differently? Any reason it was stuck mostly closed? Maybe that was on purpose because of something to do with the turbo?
2. Looking at the side of the engine with the distributor cap in front of me, the cylinders are counted from 1-6 going right to left, right?
3. Can you blow your engine having the wires in wrong place and running it?
4 does this sound like a carburetor issue? Could I have broke something in the carburetor by messing with the choke flap?
Thanks for any help
