took the boat out last week, no problems. put the muffs on, started it up, everything seemed fine until i increased the throttle to around 2000 RPM's heard this clicking sound from the lower unit area. So I put it into gear and gradually increased the throttle and still heard this kinda loud clicking noise again, only at higher RPM's it sounds like something is either not engaged all the way or not dis-engaged all the way.

any advice? Thanks, Doug

Hi Guys:

Can you give us a little more info on your outfit? Like, what year and model of engine and outdrive you have.

You really shouldn't run more than 1500 rpm on the hose anyway --- the clicking is the drive jumping in and out of gear -- it needs the resistance it gets in the water to stay engaged -- that said, check your lower shift cable. If its not in good shape, it can prevent the drive from fully engaging -- and chew up your clutch dogs quickly....

Re: mercruiser 165

Thank you, appreciate the info. I have another question if you don't mind.

Okay, the last few times out the boat runs great. On the way back in, the idle is very rough, so rough at times it will stall. It gets a little nerve racking going through channels marked "minimum wake" when there's alot of boat traffic. I have to keep it at around 1100 rpm's to keep it from stalling out. It runs smooth (idling) going out for the day, but runs rough (idling) on the way back for the day. this is an 1971 Silverline (made right here in Minnesota) 165 Chevy straight 6 . I think it's a pre alpha lower unit? i'm sure you guys know. please let me know where you would start.

much appreciated,
Doug
