Mercruiser 170 distributor same as the 140?

Just bought and started working on1986 mercruiser 170 4 cylinder. I found the distributor cap is missing. Can I use a distributor cap from a 140 hp mercruiser I happen to have in my garage? I no these engines had some gm delco parts, just dont know about the distributor.

See if it will fit, it should be the same cap

no - the 470 has its own dizzy. the difference is in the drive for the oil pump.

however the cap may fit. you will need to check. I believe that they do differ a bit.

Thank guys. I remembered the 140 was a OMC not mercruiser so probably totally different. Im still going to look for it though just to see if I can get it running without waiting a week for parts
