Hi, I have a 1986 Four Winns boat with a mercuiser 170 in it. Last year I changed the points over to a Pertronics system and had the carb rebuilt. I also put a new starter on it last year. It has always been hard to start and still is but yesterday when I was trying to start it, everything died. I have checked the battery and cleaned the terminals, I pulled the starter and bench tested it and it's fine. The trim works but nothing else does. The blower or the bilge pump or the running lights won't work . I checked the fuses for everything and they are all good. I checked the 50 amp reset and it's fine. When I turn the key I don't even get a click ..I'm at my wits end trying to figure this out, can anyone offer me any suggestions?? Thanks for the use of this forum as well ..

How did you check things. Looking doesn't count. Testing with a meter does.
Something that you say looks ok, isn't. Get a meter.

Re: Mercruiser 170 Electrical

I checked all the fuses with a meter as well as the continuity through the reset. I checked the ground that comes off the regulator but I haven't looked for any other grounds....Where would be the best place to look, on the block ?? Okay, I just ran a jumper from the neg. on the bat. to the block and it didn't make any difference .
