I have a 1986 Wellcraft with a 170HP mercruiser I/O cooling system, freshwater overheating. Should I replace the water pump? Or anyone suggest anything else to try?

The first thing to check on ANY I/O overheat, is the RAW water pump impeller. In your case, it's in the outdrive.

The outdrive was completly rebuilt two years ago. I don't think it's that. I keep hearing about a heat exchanger. Do you have any advise to offer on them? Could it be that?

Your heat exchanger could be an issue - relatively simple and easy to clean. But as Don mentioned - even though it was rebuilt two years ago - could also be your impeller. Seen those go bad in less than a year. Non-use will kill em' pretty quick. Also a very simple change out.

Re: mercruiser 170 overheating

I am having the same problem. However, we are loosing antifreeze out the outdrive. When we put the ear muffs on and ran the boat we noticed when we shut the boat and water off that there was antifreeze on the ground. It is sometimes hard to see if you are only loosing a little bit. We purchased some die and got a black light so we could see where it was leaking and we found nothing. As time went on we did notice that the seal around the exhaust manifold had a few drops of antifreeze on it so we replaced that and we replaced the water hose in the out drive because we noticed it had a kink in it. We also purchased a kit from Napa Auto Parts that allows you to check for fumes to see if you have exhaust coming out of the radiator and we do. We took the heat exchanger out of the boat and had it checked at a radiator shop and it was fine. I have no water in my oil. I do not know what to do next. Good Luck!
