mercruiser 1984 noises?

Tinny noise sounds almost like metallic contactfrom front of engine while running. I suspect timing chain ,also what should engine compression be> I imagine lowcompression can make I tnoisy?? I tried to tune it up with carb rebuild a set points wres plugs oil change ect, at hi gher rpmruns sort of poorly? any ideas>? Low compression do this? Thanx Guys Mike

Ayuh,.... Have ya done a compression test,... 'bout 100 psi, 'n under, is a rebuildable core motor, not a Runner,...

Runnin' outa steam at higher rpms, under load is usually a sign of a fuel restriction/ delivery issue,...
Everything from the tank's vent to the carb is Suspect,...

The entire fuel lines and system including fuel pump carb has been replaced or rebuilt, New Points plugs cap rotor condenser wires and all new replaced ,check valve in fuel tank removed and regular fitting installed, fuel water separator installed, Had it out 3 times, funny noise from front engine, have you seen where the timing chain rubbed on the front cover sides> This boat dioesnt have many hours at all on it, Thanx Mike
