Hi all,
I have done a lot of reading on this forum and finally decided to sign up. I am hoping you guys can give me some insight on my first post.
I just moved on to a canal on a chain of lakes in southern michigan. I have an olddd four winns center console deck boat with a 2.5 mercruiser in it that filled up with water while i was gone for the day. After this incident, i obviously ordered an automatic bilge. Of course, it didn't stop me from driving the boat when i got home. I did not realize that the water got high enough to get into the motor (almost touching the starter, must've got in through crank seals/oil pan gasket). I smelled something, opened the engine compartment, and immediately shut the motor down. There was milkshake oil/water everywhere. I just checked/topped off the oil the previous day and it showed no signs of water in the oil. The water temp never got over 145 and the oil pressure was still strong. I pulled the boat out, drained the oil, dumped some kerosene through the motor to clean it out, pulled the valve cover and cleaned it and the rockers, and did a couple oil changes. I still have some milky residue on the cap but dipstick shows no water/milky discoloration so i decided to throw the boat in the water after running it on ears for 30 minutes.
I can run the boat all day at idle and ~2k rpms or less and it runs fine. No smoking, water temp/oil pressure good. Once i open it up and go wot or even 3/4 throttle, the top of the manifold starts smoking after 30-45 seconds. At first i was thinking it was residue but i have ran the boat for a while and it still does it. When i throttle back down, it will stop smoking. The boat has no driveability issues and the oil on the dipstick has remained just oil, i think a cracked cylinder head/gasket is unlikely. Is this a common symptom of a bad manifold? I have no idea how old the manifold/elbow are on it (just got the boat over winter) but i hate to spend all the money on a new set and still have an underlying problem.
Thanks in advance for the advice!
