mercruiser 228 fuel problems

i have a mercruiser 228 and am haveing trouble with the fuel. I have gotten to motor to turn over and run if i pour gas down the carb, but it only runs for a little bit. i took off the fuel filter and it was about half full and also the carb was empty. theni pulled off teh fuel line right before the valve going to the tank and the line was empty and with the valve open no fuel came out. How do i get the system to prime again?

i sucked on the valve and gas came through the valve but it wont go throught the hose and filter to teh carb. is there a prime somewhere?
