I have a 1979 Sea Ray 260 weekender with a mercruiser 260. When I push throttle forward from neutral it clunks into forward gear hard. Also when running if I push throttle completely forward my max rpm is 3000. It's not enough to plane out. Manual says 4200-4500 rmp max but wont go. In neutral I have full rpm travel.

Welcome to iBoats,

Has the boat run properly in the past with the current setup (prop ect)? Is the boat hull clean? If yes, then start with the usual things. Check compressions, check spark, check spark timing and firing order (very long story on that one!). Check fuel system, fuel pump pressure. Check that the choke is fully open, check that the throttle plates are opening fully when you push the control lever all the way.

Chris...............

The boat has ran fine before with the current prop. My friend and I rebuilt the quadrajet carb because it had some buildup from sitting for about 6 months and the accelerator pump was sticking. I'm going to check compression today and timing.
