Mercruiser 260 - Coolant in Oil

Hi All,

Need some help here. I was getting my boat going a week ago, and as I was getting things ready, I checked and noticed that my coolant level was down. I ended up having to add about 3/4 of a gallon of antifreeze. I checked the oil and dot notice anything unusual, and even added a half quart of oil.

I then started the engine and it immediately started coughing black smoke and also occasional puffs of white steam.

After shutting down, I checked plugs and they were all sooty, one cylinder looked like it might be a bit of water (some corrosion), checked oil and the level appeared to go up substantially. I pumped the oil out and it obviously had significant amounts of coolant in it - although it does not separate from the oil (is this right, does it stay saturated?).

So the question is: where would I leak coolant into the oil, but slowly over the course of the winter? Most of the reading I have seen relates to riser gaskets and exhaust manifold, but would would I leak that much coolant if it is just sitting there not running? Or is this indicative of something more serious?

Also, is this a hint? No, or minimal, coolant seemed to appear in oil, until AFTER I started it (at least the level in the pan was not up significantly).

Before I dive in and start taking off risers and manifolds, etc., just wanted to see if anyone else had seen this, and if I am screwed for the season! I hope not!

thanks,

Dan
