Hello Everyone it has been awhile since I've been on the forums. So on Saturday I took my family to the jones beach air show to see the blue angles perform. Everything went great till we left the show. We were in a no wake zone and was about to plane off at the end of the zone. I gave the boat about 3/4 throttle and then bang the motor revved to 6000 rpms and the boat came off plane. I knew right away what it was. Smelled burning rubber and smoke coming from the engine compartment. I was the overtaken by 4-5 30 foot boats plowing to get on plane and did not seem to care swamping my 25 foot sea ray with three kids on board.

What I found interesting is that I still had propulsion at idle and around 1400 rpms, anything over that it would slip and rubber would start to burn. So I limped back to the dock which took 2 hours but I made it.

Now the motor is a Chevrolet 350 (315hp rated) marine motor that I purchased from Michigan Motorz and it has about 96 hours total with the engine coupler that was provided with the package. WOT is around 4400rpms with a 4 blade turning point propeller. I never had any vibrations or even signs that the coupler was going to fail. Last year I replaced the oil seal on the upper behind the universal joints and I have no issues with leaking or gear issues. Gimbal bearing I want to say is approx. 6 years old. When I installed the drive this year it slid in with a little bump with my foot. So I Think Engine alignment is good. I have an alignment tool but I haven't checked for alignment in a while.

Only things I can think of that could of caused this correct me if I'm wrong, when I was at Zack's Bay which is around 1.5-7 feet deep I ran into some mud causing me to raise the drive to get through it. I never raised throttle just at Idle. Also when the motor was off I raised drive up to check prop paint was still on it. Could raising the drive throw the alignment out?

The bright side to this is the motor is very easy to remove since sea ray has removable floors around the engine, and the local tool rental place has a custom engine hoist made for boats that are on cement block or stands. It sucks though because I thought I was going to have a easy summer with the boat since she has been running so well. But we all know in the boating world that is a myth lmao. Sorry for the long post and any comments would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank You,

I think your coupler went because it was out of alignment. Raising the drive would have no effect on the coupler if it was in alignment
