Hello all, been awhile since I've posted but have been reading a LOT during this season. I purchased a 1994 Sea Ray 180 Bowrider last fall and found a Core plug had popped out in the bellhousing, also found the bellows had cracked, and she wouldn't idle. I tore into it this spring, pulled the engine, replaced the Core plug, replaced the belts, spark plugs, gimble bearing, bellows, and the trim sensors since they basically fell apart upon removal. After re-assembly, she still wouldn't run so I checked the filters, well the carb filter was clogged solid with a powder almost sand like substance. Replaced that and the filter in the pump, still wouldn't run. I then tore into the carb and it was full of water in the bowl. Cleaned it out, cleared the passages etc. Now she idles, she runs well, etc.

So I get everything squared away and take it to the lake to make sure the shift cab/interrupter switch is working correctly. I then try to take it on its first ride of the season bringing me to my next problem - it will start to move ok but if you gradually give it throttle it starts to die out on you. No backfires or anything, just dies down and will eventually stall if you don't pull back on the throttle. On the contrary, if you start moving and just floor it or go just beyond half throttle it jumps on plane and goes without issue. If you are on plane and pull back beyond half throttle it will eventually come off plane and die out again.

So I wasn't sure if this was the idle mixture screws or something else - since I assumed those were simply for idle only. I did remove these and cleaned the passages when cleaning the carb. I screwed all the way in and then 1 1/2 turns out. Other than this she runs excellent - all the way to 5,000RPM as indicated by the Tach on the Dash. Very smooth runner and idles very nice as well.

Taking a stab in the dark here, but have you checked to see if the distro is advancing the spark correctly? The distributor may be sticking as you ease throttle, but when you drop the hammer it jumps to where its supposed to be. Just something to investigate... Put a timing light on it and see if its advancing as you ease the throttle forward...

Clean the carb

I thought of this as well but have already thoroughly cleaned it out. Are there other passages that I'm not getting too? Why would it work fine under heavy throttle but not part throttle? Doesn't this carb use the same jets for all throttle inputs?

Carb uses different ports for different amounts airflow. If a carb only used the main jets then it would only run good at a single speed. So it has idle ports and main jets and a power valve for different rates of airflow through the carb. Get a carb kit and take it all the way apart. Nice thing is the Merc manual has a step by step that is pretty good guide.

Gotcha, kinda figured as much but really wasn't seeing it when I cleaned her out. Hopefully Napa has a rebuild kit, I'd like to get it on the water this weekend.

Just to update, ordered a rebuild kit but when I got home I decided to look into it more. Had my wife slowly give throttle, engine off, with the flame arrestor off and there were two steady streams of fuel sprayed down the carb. I then checked the idle mixture screw at the carb base and noticed it was more than 2 turns out so I fixed that. Lastly my carb has the 3 hole accelerator pump arm/linkage which is currently in the center hole. I plan on putting in the water today to test it out again. Hoping it was simply needing an adjustment.

Good luck, but don't think that is going to work. Your accelerator pump is working (sort of), but it's not the problem

I appreciate the response, if that is not the problem than what do you think is? Venturi clogged? I'm probably just going to rebuild it but was hoping to get away without having to do it. Been working on this since the spring and now the season is basically over as I get it finished up haha.
