Hi all.I discovered a crack in the #1 cylinder wall of my 1992 Merc 3.0.It was filled with water. I've decided to go ahead with a rebuild.A local automotive engine repair/exchange shop told me they would be able to re-sleeve the cylinder for under $200.Is this the way to go or should I look for a short block exchange? The engine has 380 hrs. on it.Thanks in advance.

Welcome to iboats.

I'm not aware those have sleeves. I think the metal on a 3L would be too thin to allow sleeving.

i think that it would be fine to resleave the cylinder if it's fresh water and you have kept the engine sealed. it's a gm moter and your repair shop would know if it's possible or not. just make sure that they let you know if there is any more damaged parts and the just don't start throwing parts at it without you consent.

Thanks for the replies.I would be doing most of the labor. Not sure if it matters but the boat is used exclusively in salt water.I'm still looking for a local place that would do a short block exchange.
