Hello, my name is Dennis van Geel from the netherlands. Ands sinds one year i am a proud owner of an larson 195 sei 2000 with an mercruiser 3.0. With the delco ignition.
I had some running problems and was planning to change the distributorcap plugs cables anda coil sender( if that is the correct word).

So i pulled the distributor. (Whithout marking the rotor)
When i put everything back together i made the mistake.
The distibutor was not fully seated ( thought it was) and i cranked the engine.

So i think the gears are off.
After installing in what i thought was the right way i could not get it running properly. It is not running smooth and bogging. With the timing procedure i cant get it right.

Can someone tel me how i can put de gears the right way? Or what may be the problem? Im sure fuel is not te problem

Thanks in advance. I just want to enjoy her again!

With kind regarts,

Dennis van Geel

you have to re-stab the distributor properly. when inserting the distributor, the rotor will turn as the distributor is installed. make sure to have the rotor pointing close to the #1 cylinder tower on the cap (just get it close, you have to set timing), and the distributor will sit a bit proud until the oil pump drive on the end of the distributor drops into the oil pump shaft. to get the oil pump shaft to drop in, you need to turn the engine over. this is normally done with the starter. once the distributor is in all the way, snug it down.

then you need to use a timing light to set the timing. you will need to put the distributor in base timing mode with a shunt (its in the manual) and set the distributor to the proper base timing for your motor. I believe it is 1 degree ATDC

after timing, remove the shunt and clamp the distributor tightly

here is a link to a chaparral forum with a copied set of instructions for putting the engine in base timing mode

Thank you for your fast reply.

So it is not a problem that the engine was chranked without the distibutor in properly? and the end of de distibutor and de gears that turn/slide in are in the specific tooth where they need to be?

or are these gears not so specific. and only the end of the distibutor (witch you can put only 2 ways.)

I set de base mode in with the loop.(the proper way, i knew this had to happen.)

it runs so rough. not like how it had run before ( in and without base mode )

Thanks for you help so far!
