Mercruiser 3.0 Fuel pump filter?

Hi, thought I would check my fuel filters, still trying to get the motor running:confused: . Found the filter in-line at the carb, it was a quarter full of what looked like sand! Decided to remove fuel pump for closer look, removed the bowl and found what looks like a piece of 'volcanic rock' - is this the filter, I was expecting a gauze or paper type filter. Anyone know if this is correct and should it be replaced? Thanks Dean

There should be no such object in the pump.As you quite rightly said the fuel filter on your engine (if inboard) is barrell shaped, metal caps at each end with paper like creased inserts .I suggest you clean the whole system as you may have crap in the carb.Following this maybe a fuel additive just to make sure all the crud has been blown away.Hope this helps.:)

Thanks for info - I know 3.0 Mercs are old engines, didn't think they were prehistoric though, filter certainly looks as though it was produced for the pump. Anyone else any comments? Have another carb on the bench at home,, ready to be rebuilt.

probably got lots of stuff in the fuel tank as well - I would drain it and see what comes out. If it is older tank it may be corrosion and need to be replaced. May also need to rebuild carb.

The 'lava rock' in the pump is a ceramic filter. It's replacement is a paper one.

That 'rock' is normal on some fuel pumps......;)
I would replace the pump at this point.....
What year & make is the engine?
Have you tried to diagnose why it doesn't run, or are you just mucking about?

Be careful who you listen to, some may not know that ceramic filter in the fuel pump is normal, and replaceable.
Replace the fuel pump filter and install a water seperating fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump. It will prevent your filters in the fuel pump and carb from filling up with crap and water getting to your carb (if there isn't too much water in your tank)
What you found in the carb filter sounds a lot like corrosion from water. Might want to pull the carb and check it for water and corrosion, also check your tank for water.

Had the same problem on my 1991 3.0.The stone filter in the fuel pump started to come apart and that was the stuff that looked like in sand in the carb filter.Ended up replacing the whole fuel pump.Installed an inline fuel filter, then a water seperator all before the fuel pump

Yeah thanks for all the feedback, think I will replace the pump and install an inline filter. A rebuild of the carb will also be completed. The boat is an '87 Searay Seville fitted with an aluminium tank. It had a new engine and outdrive around '91. I have spark and fire and fuel, but have got low pressure at cylinder #2, done leak down test - looks like valve problem. Also had recent refurb of starter as it was shot.

Have found that the Ceramic fuel filter in the pump has now been superceded by a paper type filter, have order one and will fit in due course. Just part of the general maintenance, but still got a problem with valves on #2 cylinder, I think next job is to remove head:) Thanks for advice.
