Have a old 1985 3.0 with a slow starter. Took it apart, The case had loosened just a bit, needs a new end cap bushing. Fields not rubbed, armature clean and smooth. In the process of trying to find a bushing and brushes I see complete new starters for as little as 75 bucks all the way up to $300. For 75 bucks delivered new why rebuild? Anybody had any experiance with these low $ starters?

Ayuh,.... I buy nothin' but the small little permanent magnet motor starters,....
1/2 the weight of yers, with more power,.....

Ya need the new slightly shorter bolts to mount 'em though,.....

'n ya still want a Marine rated starter,.....

I bought one of those cheap marine starters from db electrical just to get my boat going when I first got it thinking I'd buy a better one after I got some running time on it. Well that was 4 years ago and that thing is working fine the only problem I had was the slave cylinder bolts worked loose a couple weeks after I put in but some loctite fixed that. I use my boat about 4 times a week in season so it's got some use on it. I think db electrical gives you a year warranty if I remember, look em up they're on eBay.

Edit: I just looked them up and it's a 1yr warranty and you can buy an additional 1yr warranty to extend it to 2yrs for $9

Sounds good to me. Found DB electric, 60 bucks delivered. They do seem to have a lot of ifs, ands or buts as to what fits on a common '85 3.0 merc.

look up their #6788 starter that's a magnet motor like bondo recommended and that's what I ordered it says it fits nearly all 3.0l mercrusers. Also as bondo said it was half the weight and size of my old one and spins my motor over with ease. Just search "mercruiser 3.0 starter" and it's right near the top, the price is $51.13. Also it comes with new bolts.
